Benefits of pool deck paint

Visual aesthetics

One obvious benefit of painting a pool deck is aesthetics. If your pool deck is old, it probably has a lot of cracks and stains. It’s not visually appealing to look at pool decks with cracks and inconsistent colors from worn-out paint. A pool deck that is freshly painted looks more aesthetic than a pool deck that looks old and weathered.

Reduced slipperiness

When you apply a textured coating to your pool deck, you are making the surface more resistant to slips. Accidents usually happen not inside the pools, but around the pools from people slipping. So it can serve as an extra layer of protection for your kids’ safety.

More economical and effortless

It’s a lot cheaper to coat your pool deck rather than having your pool deck overhauled. If you have a wooden deck, you’ll have to go through the whole process of cleaning the old stain, sanding the surface, and refinishing your deck. With concrete, you will have to clean the surface, fill in the cracks, and cover it.

On the contrary, painting your pool deck is a more straightforward process that takes less effort.

Easy to clean up

When you paint your pool deck, its surface will become more consistent with fewer areas for dirt and debris to get caught. So you will have an easier time cleaning your pool deck.

Variety of colors

Whatever the color of your ideal pool deck may be, you can choose that color to paint your pool deck.

Less stress on your feet

If you have a concrete floor, it will absorb sunlight and the surface will get extremely hot. This creates an unpleasant experience for your bare feet. Most pool deck coating material comes with a cooling property that reduces the absorption of the sunlight, so your feet don’t have to suffer as much.

Harder to penetrate

A coated pool deck makes it harder for water and chemicals to penetrate, which contributes to its durability.

Possible drawbacks of painting a pool deck

Extra effort

As simple as it is to paint a pool deck, it’s still extra effort on your part. There’s still a little bit of preparation you need to do before applying paint.

It’s not as simple as applying paint once and letting it dry. So it may be easier to hire someone to do the job.

You may not get the desired result

Even worse, you may not successfully get the job done even after putting in all that effort. You wouldn’t want to paint your pool deck sub-optimally after spending all your time and money.

Since the concrete needs to be well prepared for you to obtain the long-lived result, you want to make sure you are meticulous with the entire procedure during the process.

Durability of paint

Generally speaking, it can be quite easy for your concrete paint to be scraped off even if you’ve done a good job. This can be disappointing especially if you’ve spent a lot of time working on your point.

What to consider when choosing paint for a pool deck?

Colors

Before you go forth with painting, you need to consider what color will best suit your pool deck. Generally speaking, most people prefer a light beige or a white color for their pool decks because those colors resemble the appearance of a sandy beach. Moreover, lighter colors do a better job of reflecting lights, which helps your pool deck stay cooler.

Earth-toned colors usually combine well with most houses and landscapes.

You may also consider other colors, such as blue or gray depending on how well those colors fit your house and landscapes.

Coloring technique

A water-based stain gives permanent color to your concrete by penetrating deep into the concrete. This technique generally gives you more options for colors.

A chemical-based stain is a cost-effective way to color your pool deck. This method of staining allows the chemical to interact with your concrete to produce colors. You can also manually apply paint with your hands to refine subtle details using this process. That said, you will have fewer options with colors.

Dry-shake color hardeners are used for producing more true-to-life color variations. The colors produced from this technique tend to err more on the intense side.

Types of paint used

Water-based paint is generally the most favored type of paint used for pool decks. It has two types: latex and acrylic. Both have good durability, but Acrylic is usually more ideal if you live in an area where the weather is not so ideal.

Oil paints usually take longer to dry. The paint mix is combined from minerals and oil, and it’s important you mix it well before you use it.

Alkyd paints come with oil, granite, sand, glycerin, and raisin. This paint is ideal for harsher weather.

Your pool deck surface types

In general, pool deck surfaces are made from one of three materials: concrete, wood, PVC.

If you want to get the best result, you will want to choose the right paint that suits the surface type of your pool deck. So, don’t forget to read the label of your paint before you buy one.

Condition of your pool deck

The condition of your pool deck will affect the type of paint you choose. If your pool deck is quite damaged with noticeable cracks, then you may want to opt for thicker paint to cover flaws.

Durability

It’s extremely important to consider the durability of paint when choosing your paint. Your pool deck will have to constantly weather the storms from a flood of water and exposure to sunlight. These can lead to many cracks and peeling if you don’t use a durable coating.

How much does it cost to paint a pool deck?

Your cost will vary widely depending on your needs. For instance, if you have a bigger pool deck, then you will need more paint than if you had a smaller pool deck.

The quality of paint also affects the price. It may be tempting for you to go with a cheaper option to save money. But you need to keep in mind that a cheaper option may end up costing you more money down the road if you apply low-quality paint that’s not durable.

So you want to do proper research before you pick your paint.

Generally speaking, you can expect to spend around $1 to $6 per sq ft. I highly recommend you consult professionals if you want to get an accurate quote.

How to Paint Your Pool Deck

Preparation

First, you want to pressure wash and clean your pool deck.

Use a chalk line to mark where the painting stops.

Next, you disperse TSP using the plastic spray pump and use the broom with medium stiffness bristle to scrap the deck.

Then, lightly wire brush the concrete.just to make sure there’s no loose peeling stain from the previous coatings.

You just need a few tools to paint your pool deck. You’ll need a bucket, a 4-inch nap, a brush, a latex exterior brush, a 9-inch pan, and a 9-inch roller.

Next, open up your concrete stain solid color and dump in some of your slip resistant additives.

You just need to dump it right into your stain. Afterward, you shake it up and you’re good to go.

That’s all you need to add to your stain. Make sure to dump in the proper amount following the instruction.

Fill the cracks

To start, you’re going to want to do cut ends all around the pool first then you’ll fill it in with your 9-inch nap.

If you find some cracks in your pool concrete, you will want to use products, such as Xcel Surfaces to fill your concrete.

Use your putty knife to apply the product, and use the wet sponge to blend it in with the rest of the deck.

Give about 10 to 15 minutes for the repair material to dry before using a wet sponge to blend it in.

Also, there may be few areas around the edges of the pool deck where the concrete is chipped off. Once again, you can use Xcel surface to cover the surface.

Hold a piece of cardboard with your other hand to prevent materials from falling into the water during this process.

Filling cracks in your pool concrete ensures there are no ants in between cracks, and it also prevents weeds from growing in the cracks.

Start painting

Before you start, you want to use the wind blower around your pool deck to get rid of all the dust.

Once you got all your cracks caulked, you want to start working on your cut ends, doing the outside and inside cut ends, and cut in around the pool slide.

Then, you’ll start painting with your roller. One tip is to use an extension pole so you don’t have to bend over as you roll.

Apply the first coat of paint with your roller.

Use the brush to paint all the edges that areas that would be hard to paint with the roller.

Apply the second coat of paint.

When you are applying the stain, you want to apply a really thin coat. You are not trying to apply a thick coat. The whole idea is to just get a nice thin coat on for coverage.

You don’t want to limit the profile of concrete and make the concrete slick.

You want to keep that concrete rough so you don’t want to put on the product that’s too thick.

Once you are done painting your pool deck, let it dry for 24 hours before you jump into the pool.

Is it okay to paint a damaged pool deck?

This depends on how you define a damaged pool deck. If your deck is falling apart structurally, then you probably need a stronger intervention than simply painting your deck.

But if it’s just a few cracks and fading here and there, then painting will do the trick just fine.

Is it necessary to seal a pool deck?

It is generally recommended that you seal your concrete deck. This provides more protection from UV rays, mold, saltwater, and harsh chemicals.
